What is branding?

Branding is the perpetual process of identifying, creating, and managing the cumulative assets and actions that shape the perception of a brand in stakeholders’ minds.

It is the integration and harmony of a variety of business aspects, such as design, vision, mission, and concept, that can establish recognition, spark emotion, and build trust among people and target audience groups. Though they are all quite different from one another, these elements work together to form a strong brand identity for customers who interact with a brand or business to be able to easily identify and form perceptions of.

Oftentimes, the idea of branding is unintentionally reduced to smaller parts of a bigger picture, thus minimizing its importance in the overall brand experience and in building brand loyalty with consumers. While visual elements, marketing efforts, and online presence are all necessary components of strong branding, they are just pieces of the larger puzzle that branding is.

Think of a brand, any brand. What springs to mind? Is it Apple? Maybe Google or Amazon? Perhaps even Starbucks or Disney? It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from, brands pay a big role in all our lives. Good brands have the power to sway your decision-making, get talked about in our daily lives and even create communities of like-minded people. It isn’t just companies that need a brand, they apply to individuals too such as celebrities, athletes and everyday people.

What do we mean by ‘brand’? A brand is something that makes you recognisable from all other sellers. This could take the form of a design, a name, phrase or any specific feature that is used to identify a specific service or product.

If you think that building a brand name is worthless or a waste of money, then you need to think again. The power of a good brand is limitless.

Reasons why your business needs branding:

1. Branding sets you apart from the competition:

With millions of businesses worldwide, there are bound to be copycat or similar companies out there to you. They might offer similar products or services to you, or you might be starting out in an already competitive market. Fighting competition on a global or even national scale is hard, but with a strong brand by your side, you can easily set yourself apart. A brand gives you that extra edge and originality that other companies or individuals might never have.

Imagine you’re buying a pair of trainers. You see a pair of nice Kshs100 Nike trainers and then a pair of very similar Kshs20 unbranded trainers. Some money-conscious consumers might buy the cheaper pair, while consumers interested in quality or personal appearance would rather invest more money into the expensive pair of trainers. All because they are familiar with Nike and associate their trainers with being trendy and of a high-quality.

Consumers only need to see the logo of the Nike brand and already associate a number of other features or benefits with this brand.

When your company is unknown, your potential consumers have no associations to make with your brand. And for this reason, customers see you as a risk which may not pay off in the end.

2. Branding makes selling easier:

The customer buying journey is a complex thing. And it becomes even more complex when the value of products or services gets higher. But one thing that remains consistent, is the impact of a good brand in the process. Whether the customer is spending Ksh1 or Ksh10,000, branding could be the very reason to make their decision.
Take for example the Adidas collaboration with Kanye West’s brand name for his clothing and shoe line. These collaborations will instantly sell out and have queues of people waiting to purchase these on the day of release, regardless of the price. Having the brand collaboration with Kanye West adds significant value. Combine that with the limited number of items released it creates even more demand, in turn making them significantly easier to sell.

3. Building Trust and Credibility:

Trust from your audience is one of the most important things you can have as a business, but this isn’t always easy to gain. A business that’s missing key elements of branding will have an even harder time getting people to trust them.

Branding is something many of us expect to see when we look at businesses in any industry, and missing this could be a red flag to some. Without branding, you have very little to show for your business.

4. Branding increases business value:

When you create and sustain significant branding and a clear brand strategy, you will inevitably increase your brand awareness. As you tighten up the narrative of the story you want your business to tell and how you want to tell it, you can implement it into your marketing strategy and advertising practices. As more and more people become aware of your company, its practices and values, and all that it represents, you can continue to build upon a strong foundation and increase the overall value of your business.

5. More People Will Recognize Your Business:

One of the most obvious reasons that businesses need branding is to help them get recognized more often. If you have strong branding for your business, people will naturally take note of it much more than they would a business without it. A business that doesn’t really have any cohesive branding isn’t going to stay in someone’s mind for very long.

However, a business with elements such as a distinct logo, attractive colors and other visual elements will be much more memorable. Someone might see your brand for only a moment, but if it sticks out in a positive way, there’s a good chance they won’t forget it, even if this person isn’t ready to use your products or services just yet. Eventually, when they’re ready to take the next steps, if your branding has stuck with them, they’ll come back to you.

6. Branding Helps You with Repeat Business:

A customer might try your product once, but if a competitor offers a lower price, they might switch to them. And acquiring new customers is not just hard but also expensive. But branding makes sure your customers stick with you. It helps you develop a connection with your customers so they start choosing you out of habit and trust. These loyal customers provide predictable and recurring revenue. They cost less to market your brand to and are more profitable over their lifetime.

7. Branding Lets You Charge More:

People don’t hesitate to pay more for the brands they trust. Take the example of Starbucks or Apple. These brands have established themselves as premium leagues, and due to this, customers are willing to buy from them at a higher price due to their perceived value and less-known alternatives.

8. Branding represents your company and your people:

It’s important to remember that while branding is made up of many parts, it ultimately represents your company’s core values. Not only that, but your branding stands as a reflection of each person involved in your business, from junior staff to C-level executives. Investing in the right branding for your business will reap a greater harvest in that it will show people what you and those who work alongside you believe in and stand for.
